Late last summer John McCain's campaign was on the verge of coming to an end. He had problems with some of his top advisers and the campaign was almost bankrupt. Many believed that his campaign would not make it through the year. Last week McCain won the New Hampshire primary and is now in an intense battle in South Carolina and Michigan. He has clearly made a comeback and the GOP nomination is now in his grasp.
I like Senator McCain, but I LOVED the "Straight Talk Express" John McCain and last year that man seemed to be disappearing. He even made amends with the religious right. Lately the original maverick McCain seems to be reappearing and if he wins the GOP nomination hopefully the "Maverick" will be back in full force.
As he alienated his old political characteristics his chances seemed to diminish but as he started marching to the old beat he was suddenly winning NH. Clearly John McCain as the Maverick is much more popular and if he continues to be himself his chances can only increase.
The next few months will decide many things for McCain and may even prove some wrong, including myself.
